Arteta Praises ‘More Reliable’ Team and Reveals Havertz Setback.
The Gunners' boss remains confident that his squad can keep managing with player absences following disclosing that attacker Kai Havertz will not return for several more weeks.
Extended Absence for Havertz
Havertz has been out since August after undergoing knee surgery. Initially expected to come back at the start of this month, Arteta revealed the player faced a hurdle when increasing his training and was unable to move forward “to the next level.”
“We learned, and we were able to put together a group that is far more dependable and has more options,” stated the manager.
Selection Dilemma for Midweek Fixture
This update creates a dilemma for Wednesday’s fixture at the Emirates against Brentford. A decision is required between persisting with Mikel Merino, who scored playing out of position last weekend, or reinstating Viktor Gyökeres, who featured briefly from a muscle injury as a substitute. Long-term absentee Gabriel Jesus is available after 11 months out.
Fitness Doubts Linger
More doubts surround centre-back William Saliba and winger Leandro Trossard, who both missed the Stamford Bridge game. Consequently, recent arrivals Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié will probably start again in the heart of the defence for the league leaders.
The manager is convinced the substantial investment on reinforcements in the last transfer window has left Arsenal in a far better place to navigate such unavailability.
Greater Options Key to Title Challenge
In response if a larger pool of players was benefiting their league challenge, the manager agreed. “Yes, since the current term has presented greater challenges in certain positions, and now what’s happening with the backline,” he added.
“We learned from the past that we need to utilize players in various roles, and they must be capable to fulfil different roles if we aim to challenge at the highest level. And the example of Mikel is just the best one.”
Manager’s Sympathy for Suffering Star
Speaking about the delay highlighted by national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, Arteta provided further detail. “His recovery was progressing. He failed to advance to the subsequent stage and now the signs are like we have solved that issue.”
He shared his keenness to welcome him back. “The team is keen to have him. Truly, it’s a player that, in my view, I value highly for his contributions to the team, but his personality, his nature. I observe his frustration being outside.”
“His fitness history is phenomenal, he's usually fit, and I am eagerly awaiting to get him back involved playing because I think it’s going to be a huge lift.”
