At least 13 people perish and 98 wounded in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” stated the country's president.

The president reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose term finished the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's economic goals for the southeastern region.

Another massive rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The building of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in public works. They were completed at an accelerated pace, surpassing forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised persistent questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party called for an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This pause was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."

In reply, the president insisted that the train had been operating in total compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and operation of these vital initiatives.
