Ladd’s early career included small roles in TV shows like The Fugitive while that decade had her appearing alongside Jack Nicholson in Chinatown.

During the eighties, she starred in the thriller Black Widow, a suspense story plus humorous film Christmas Vacation while also joining the show Alice, a television series derived from the film Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.
In the subsequent decade, she was given a further best supporting actress nomination for her role in Lynch’s Wild at Heart where she acted as the mother of her actual daughter Dern’s character. The next year she received another nomination for her acting in Rambling Rose which included Dern.
“This was the film that the late Princess Diana picked as her top choice, and she brought Laura and I to the UK for a premiere and a party in our honor,” Ladd shared regarding Rambling Rose. “She sat with us, taking our hands, and crying, watching us perform.”
That decade also saw roles in the comedy Cemetery Club, a film reuniting her with Burstyn, Primary Colors, a satirical film, starring John Travolta and Payne’s the movie Citizen Ruth in which she portrayed the mother of Dern again. Family Ties
She happened to be the third cousin of Tennessee Williams, who she called “a great influence in my life”.
Back in 2018, doctors misdiagnosed Ladd with a respiratory illness and informed her life expectancy was six months but she regained full health after her daughter transferred her to another medical facility.
