England's Assistant Coach Explains His Approach: For England, the Jersey Must Be a Cape, Not Protective Gear.
A decade ago, Barry featured for Accrington Stanley. Today, his attention is fixed on helping Thomas Tuchel secure World Cup glory in the upcoming tournament. His journey from player to coach began as an unpaid coach coaching youngsters. He recalls, “Nights, a small field, tasked with 11 vs 11 … poor equipment, limited resources,” and it captivated him. He had found his destiny.
Metoric Climb
His advancement stands out. Commencing with his first major job, he established a reputation with creative training and excellent people skills. His stints with teams led him to Chelsea and Bayern Munich, plus he took on international positions across multiple countries. He's coached legends including Thiago Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo. Now, with England, it’s full-time, the peak in his words.
“Everything starts with a dream … Yet I'm convinced that obsession can move mountains. You envision the goal but then you bring it down: ‘What's the process, each day, each phase?’ Our goal is the World Cup. However, vision doesn't suffice. It's essential to develop a structured plan enabling us to maximize our opportunities.”
Obsession with Details
Obsession, focusing on tiny aspects, is central to his philosophy. Putting in long hours under the sun—sometimes the moon, too, they both push hard at comfort zones. The approach involve player analysis, a strategy for high temperatures for the finals abroad, and creating a unified squad. The coach highlights the national team spirit and avoids language such as "break".
“It's not time off or a rest,” Barry says. “It was vital to establish a setup that attracts the squad and, secondly, they feel so stretched that going back is a relief.”
Greedy Coaches
He characterizes himself along with the manager as “very greedy”. “We aim to control all parts of the match,” he states. “We strive to own the whole ground and we dedicate most of our time to. It’s our job not just to keep up of the trends but to surpass them and create our own ones. It's an ongoing effort with a mindset of solving issues. And to simplify complexity.
“There are 50 days together with the team prior to the World Cup. We need to execute an intricate approach for a tactical edge and we have to make it so clear in that period. We need to progress from thought to data to knowledge to execution.
“To create a system for effective use in the 50 days, we have to use the entire 500 days we'll have after our appointment. During periods without the team, it's vital to develop bonds with them. It's essential to invest time communicating regularly, we have to see them in stadiums, understand them, connect with them. If we just use the 50 days, it's impossible.”
World Cup Qualifiers
The coach is focusing ahead of the concluding matches in the qualifying campaign – facing Serbia at home and Albania in Tirana. The team has secured qualification with six wins out of six without conceding a goal. But there will be no easing off; on the contrary. This period to reinforce the team’s identity, to gain more impetus.
“We are both certain that the football philosophy must reflect all the positives about the Premier League,” Barry says. “The physicality, the flexibility, the robustness, the honesty. The England jersey must be difficult to earn yet easy to carry. It ought to be like a superhero's cape instead of heavy armour.
“To ensure it's effortless, it's crucial to offer a style that allows them to move and run like they do every week, that resonates with them and allows them to take the handbrake off. They should overthink less and focus more on action.
“There are morale boosts for managers in attack and defense – playing out from the back, pressing from the front. But in the middle area on the field, that section, we feel the game has become stuck, notably in domestic leagues. Everybody has so much information currently. They understand tactics – structured defenses. Our aim is to increase tempo in that central area.”
Thirst for Improvement
His desire to get better is all-consuming. During his education for his pro license, he had concerns over the speaking requirement, especially as his class included stars including former players. To enhance his abilities, he went into the most challenging environments he could find to practise giving them. Including a prison locally, where he also took inmates in a football drill.
He earned his license as the best in his year, and his dissertation – about dead-ball situations, in which he examined numerous set-plays – became a published work. Lampard was among those won over and he hired Barry on to his staff at Chelsea. When Lampard was sacked, it said plenty that the team dismissed nearly all assistants but not Barry.
The next manager with the club was Tuchel, and, four months later, they secured European glory. After Tuchel's exit, the coach continued in the setup. But when Tuchel re-emerged at Munich, he got Barry out away from London to rejoin him. The FA view them as a partnership akin to Gareth Southgate and Steve Holland.
